Cougs may alter lineup after worst-ever defeat

After reviewing the video, Wulff, the first-year coach, made it clear that his rebuilding project is in the very early stages and that nobody's job is safe after the worst loss in school history.

The good: Despite the worst defeat in school history, the Cougars had relatively few injuries. Sophomore receiver Jeshua Anderson returned from hernia surgery and caught a pass for 5 yards. Punter Reid Forrest averaged 41.2 yards on eight attempts. He dropped two punts inside the 5-yard line and launched a career-best 58-yarder.

The bad: The defense couldn't catch a cold as the Bears pounded the Cougars for 391 rushing yards. Running back Jahvid Best accumulated 200 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries. Cal's starting quarterback, Kevin Riley, managed just 51 yards passing, which illustrates the Bears' intent to overwhelm WSU's battered defensive line with their power running attack.

Next up: at Baylor, 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Even the eternally optimistic Paul Wulff was momentarily stunned when asked the mood of the Washington State Cougars after Saturday's embarrassing 66-3 defeat to California.

"No one is happy," the Cougars coach said to start a Sunday teleconference with reporters. "But they're OK."

After reviewing the video, Wulff, the first-year coach, made it clear that his rebuilding project is in the very early stages and that nobody's job is safe after the worst loss in school history.

Immediately after the game, speculation surrounded fifth-year senior quarterback Gary Rogers, who was replaced in the second half after an ineffective two-interception performance. The backups, junior Kevin Lopina and freshman Marshall Lobbestael, each threw an interception and fared no better than Rogers, who completed 10 of 21 attempts for 78 yards. Lopina connected on 3 of 7 passes and Lobbestael misfired on two attempts.

Wulff did little to extinguish a simmering quarterback controversy on Sunday. In fact, he hinted a change might be coming.

"We're going to look at it for the next couple of days," he said. "We may have a decision Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm not sure, but it's something that we're mulling over."

Rogers, a first-year starter, has yet to fully digest WSU's new spread offense. Several dropped passes contributed to his 12-for-24 passing effort for 82 yards in the Cougars' 39-13 defeat against Oklahoma State in the season opener, but Rogers admitted he missed a few open targets.

Notes

• Senior linebacker Cory Evans suffered a neck and shoulder injury and will be limited in practice this week. He's expected to play Saturday.

• Redshirt freshman DT Toby Turpin, who underwent thumb surgery last week, might return this week.

• Junior DE Jessy Sanchez is expected to undergo an MRI exam on a shoulder injury. He might redshirt this season depending on the severity of the injury.
