Player of the game

Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly went 20 of 23 for 246 yards and four touchdowns, and set an ASU consecutive completions record with 18. He topped the 13 set by Dick Mackey vs. S.D. Navy in 1952.

Play of the game

On a third-and-10 situation, Kelly flipped a swing pass to his right to running back Marion Grice, who made four Cougars miss as he wove through the middle of the defense to give the Sun Devils a 25-0 lead.

Turning point

No such thing in this game, but it began bleakly for WSU, when, after its first possession, deep snapper Alex Den Bleyker dribbled one back to punter Mike Bowlin, and when Bowlin couldn't handle it, ASU took over at the 6 and eventually kicked a field goal.

Key stat

Arizona State recorded seven sacks, bringing to 53 the nation-leading number WSU has allowed, and making it a total of 239 since the start of the 2008 season.

A final farewell?

Quarterback Jeff Tuel might play his final game as a Cougar on Friday against Washington. Or he might not. The fourth-year senior is seeking a medical redshirt for the time he missed in 2011, though he said again Saturday he hasn't heard back from the NCAA and isn't sure whether he'll return even if the extra year is granted.

Injuries

No new apparent injuries (WSU does not release injury information).

By the numbers

1 Net rushing yard for the Cougars, but that's at least better than the four games in which they finished with negative net rushing yards.

4 Double-figures yardage runs by WSU backs.

8 Catches by ASU's Rashad Ross, who had only 23 entering the game.

32 First downs for Arizona State, compared to less than half of that, 14, for WSU.

136 Consecutive points ASU had rung up at Sun Devil Stadium on the Cougars before a late WSU touchdown — including 46 Saturday, 42 and 31 in shutout victories in 2010 and 2008, and the final 17 in a 47-14 victory in 2006.

137 Yards below its season average for the Pac-12's passing leader, WSU, which threw for just 240 yards.

Quoteworthy

"I'm sure this offseason will be nothing like I've gone through before. It'd be great to kind of end the season on a high note." WSU QB Connor Halliday, looking to the Apple Cup.
