LOS ANGELES — Washington State's extended stay in Southern California figures to be more enjoyable with a victory under its belt.
Brock Motum scored 16 of his 27 points in the second half and the Cougars withstood a late rally to beat USC 43-38 Saturday.
"At the end of the day, the guys persevered," WSU coach Ken Bone said.
Motum made 12 of 21 shots as the Cougars (15-15 overall, 7-11 Pac-12) held a 30-10 scoring advantage in the paint and a 36-25 rebounding edge.
Instead of traveling back to Pullman, the WSU team will remain in Los Angeles in advance of its Pac-12 tournament opener against Oregon State on Wednesday.
Maurice Jones scored 11 points to lead USC (6-25, 1-17), which closed the regular season with a ninth straight loss to sit at the bottom of the Pac-12 standings.
WSU prevailed despite not having a field goal in the last 9:08.
