Central Washington beats rival Western Washington in GNAC softball tournament

Both teams remain alive in the double-elimination tournament at Richland.

In a game that had nine unearned runs, six errors and three lead changes, No. 2 seed Western Washington fell 8-7 to No. 3 seed Central Washington in an opening-round game of the GNAC softball tournament on Thursday.

Michaela Hazlett hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to lead CWU.

Both teams remain alive in the double-elimination tournament in Richland.

Elsewhere

• The Seattle Thunderbirds selected defenseman Jerret Tyszka in the first round, 16th overall, of the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. With the 15th overall pick, the Everett Silvertips took defenseman Jantzen Leslie of Lloydminster, Alberta.

• Guard Kyle Impero, who was the NWAAC Northern Region MVP at Whatcom Community College last season, accepted a basketball scholarship offer at Western Washington, beginning this fall. The 6-foot-4 Impero averaged 28.3 points per game as a sophomore for the Orcas.
