BELLINGHAM — David Downs had 20 points and 12 assists, leading Seattle Pacific to an 85-59 men's basketball victory over Grand Canyon on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regional at Carver Gym on the Western Washington campus.

The 6-foot-2 junior point guard from Bellevue Christian factored into 56 SPU points. Four of his assists led to three-point possessions.

"He did an unbelievably good job," SPU coach Ryan Looney said.

"If you look at all levels of college basketball, the teams that have great play from their point guard are the teams that are able to make deep runs. David is older now, he's a junior, and he's experienced in this environment. He gave our team a huge lift today."

The third-seeded Falcons (26-3), who won their 10th straight game, advanced to Monday's 2:30 p.m. regional semifinal against No. 2 seed Cal Poly Pomona (28-2), which beat Chico State 69-61.

Joshua Lowery was the only scorer in double figures for Grand Canyon (23-8). The Antelopes from Phoenix were limited to 37 percent shooting (17 of 46).

SPU, meanwhile, shot 58 percent (30 of 52) and went 10 for 22 behind the three-point arc.

Jobi Wall had 21 points and hit 6 of 9 three-point attempts, and Cory Hutsen came off the bench for 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting for the Falcons. Patrick Simon added 13 points.

The Falcons out-rebounded the Antelopes 36-20, led for the 22nd time this season by sophomore guard Riley Stockton, who had seven rebounds.

Grand Canyon led 22-19 before Seattle Pacific took control with a 16-4 surge, fueled by seven points and three assists from Downs.
