FEDERAL WAY — California won its first conference men's swimming championship since 1981, edging Stanford for the Pac-12 men's team title Wednesday night at the King County Aquatic Center.

Cal finished with 825 points, Stanford had 800 and third-place USC scored 638.5 in the four-day meet.

Three other Pac-12 schools — Arizona, Utah and Arizona State — and UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly also participated in the eight-team event.

Cal's Tom Shields was named Swimmer of the Meet after winning five events. He took the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, the 100 backstroke and swam on the winning 200 and 400 medley relays. Shields, a senior, completed his career with 16 Pac-12 titles.

Stanford sophomore Dave Nolan set a meet record on the final day while winning the 200 breaststroke in 1 minute, 40.39 seconds.

LACEY — Aubree Callen hit a tiebreaking three-pointer with 1:07 remaining as Seattle Pacific hung on to beat Montana State Billings 63-60 in the first round of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament.

Suzanna Ohlsen scored 19 points for the Falcons (17-10), who play 10th-ranked Simon Fraser (22-4) in the semifinals at noon Friday at Saint Martin's University.

SPU led 60-52 before an 8-0 run by Billings (17-10). After Callen's three, the Falcons forced the Yellowjackets into a 30-second shot-clock violation. Billings had one last chance to tie with nine seconds left, but a three-point attempt bounced off the rim and Katie Benson grabbed the rebound for SPU.

Bobbi Knudsen scored 22 for Billings.

T-birds rally,

beat Chiefs

SPOKANE — Shea Theodore and Connor Sanvido got the tying and go-ahead goals 85 seconds apart as the Seattle Thunderbirds scored three times in the third period to beat Spokane 4-2 in a Western Hockey League game.

The Chiefs led 2-0 on goals by Mike Aviani and Carter Proft before Roberts Lipsbergs got the T-birds' first goal 8:37 into the second period.

Theodore tied it with a power-play goal 6:36 into the third, and Sanvido got a short-handed goal moments later. Riley Sheen added an empty-net goal for Seattle with 18 seconds remaining.

Luke Lockhart assisted on two goals for the Thunderbirds. Goalkeeper Brandon Glover stopped 27 of 29 Spokane shots.
