Western Washington men's basketball team off to 9-0 start this season | Northwest briefs
The defending Division II national champion Vikings improved to 9-0 and Wednesday's win was their 15th straight over the past two seasons.
Guard John Allen, a Mountlake Terrace grad, scored a season-high 32 points, leading the Western Washington men's basketball team to a 103-74 victory Wednesday over Central Oklahoma at the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas.
The defending Division II national champion Vikings improved to 9-0 and the win was their 15th straight over the past two seasons. The 9-0 start matches starts in 1967-68 and 1987-88. The longest string of victories at the start of a season is 21 in 1971-72.
Allen, who played just 25 minutes, was 9 of 13 from the field, including 6 of 9 on three-pointers, and 8 of 9 on free throws.
"He's probably one of the best shooters in the country when he's open," said WWU coach Tony Dominguez.
Paul Jones (Kent) added 18 points.

• Guard Corinn Waltrip matched a career-high with 23 points, including nine in the extra frame, as the Western Washington women's basketball team topped Grand Canyon 72-68 in overtime at the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas. The Vikings improved to 8-2.

• The Washington State football program signed five athletes Wednesday to letters of intent: defensive end Lyman Faoliu, linebacker Ivan McLennan, offensive lineman Jacob Seydel, receiver Robert Lewis and B.J. Salmonson. Salmonson is a 6-5, 285-pound offensive lineman from Nooksack Valley High.
• Chambers Bay, the host course of the 2015 U.S. Open, was named Wednesday as the state's No. 1 public course, edging out Wine Valley Golf Club of Walla Walla, in a yearlong online vote through the Muckleshoot Casino.
