Arkansas hires ex-Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema | College football
Bret Bielema is leaving Rose Bowl-bound Wisconsin to coach Arkansas, which was 4-8 this season.
Bret Bielema is moving from the Big Ten to the Southeastern Conference, and Gus Malzahn will coach Auburn.
Meanwhile, Boston College turned to Temple to fill its coaching vacancy, hiring Steve Addazio away from the Owls.
Arkansas released a statement Tuesday night saying Bielema, 68-24 in seven seasons at Wisconsin, has agreed to a deal to take over the program reeling after the firing of former coach Bobby Petrino.
Bielema's contract is for six years and $3.2 million annually, said a person familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information hasn't been released publicly.
The Razorbacks opened the season with hopes of challenging for a national championship, only to get mired in the Petrino scandal before stumbling to a 4-8 finish.
Arkansas brought in John L. Smith as interim coach after firing Petrino for, among other things, hiring his mistress to work in the athletic department. Athletic director Jeff Long announced after the season Smith wouldn't return.
Bielema, 42, seems likely to bring a different approach. Arkansas continually ranked among the SEC's best passing teams under Petrino while Bielema is known for dominant offensive lines and power running.
"During my conversation with Jeff, he described the characteristics for the perfect fit to lead this program," Bielema said in a statement. "It was evident we share the same mission, principles and goals."
Wisconsin (8-5) will face Stanford (11-2) in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.
Malzahn was the offensive coordinator at Auburn for three seasons under the coach the Tigers fired, Gene Chizik.
With Malzahn running the offense and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton playing quarterback, Auburn went 14-0 in the 2010 season and earned the national title.
Malzahn left after the 2011 season to coach Arkansas State and this year Auburn finished 3-9 overall and 0-8 in the SEC without him.
Malzahn, 47, led Arkansas State to a 9-3 record, a Sun Belt Conference title and a berth in the GoDaddy.com Bowl.
Boston College coach Addazio, 53, was 13-11 in two seasons at Temple.
• Darrell Hazell is expected to leave Kent State to coach Purdue, according to media reports.
In his second season, the 48-year-old Hazell led Kent State to an 11-2 record.
• First-season UCLA coach Jim Mora, a former Seahawks coach, said he intends to stay with the Bruins (9-4).
Auburn and Tennessee officials expressed interest in speaking with Mora about their vacancies, but no talks were held, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"It's flattering to be mentioned for such prominent jobs, but I'm committed to UCLA," Mora said.
