UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Ohio State finally got a test away from Columbus and managed to pass.

Deshaun Thomas scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and the fourth-ranked Buckeyes beat Rhode Island 69-58 in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament Saturday.

Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 15 points and Aaron Craft had 13 points and four assists for Ohio State (2-0), which struggled with the Rams (0-3) well into the second half.

"We're just going to mark it down as a win," Thomas said. "We know we're a team that can get better each and every day."

The Buckeyes had been scheduled to play Nov. 9 in the Carrier Classic on the USS Yorktown in South Carolina, but that game had to be canceled because of condensation on the court.

Ohio State will face the Washington Huskies on Sunday.

No. 5 Maryland

women lose

PHILADELPHIA — The Saint Joseph's women had lost 10 in a row against ranked teams and hadn't defeated a top-five opponent since 1977.

The Hawks changed all that when they stunned No. 5 Maryland 50-49 behind Chatilla van Grinsven's 18 points.

Saint Joseph's (2-1) beat a ranked team for the first time since a victory over No. 15 Auburn in 2007. The Terrapins are the highest-ranked team the Hawks have defeated since upsetting No. 3 Montclair State in 1977.

Alyssa Thomas had 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Terrapins (2-1), who scored two points in the last nine minutes.

Maryland coach Brenda Frese said, "This will absolutely humble us."

Baylor's Griner

sets dunks record

HONOLULU — Brittney Griner of No. 1 Baylor set an NCAA women's record for career dunks and the Bears beat Tennessee-Martin 82-67.

Griner had 18 points, including her eighth dunk. The 6-foot-8 senior previously shared the dunks record with ex-Tennessee standout Candace Parker.

"It's pretty cool — I got to get some more now," Griner said.

Baylor (3-1) bounced back after a 71-69 loss to Stanford that ended the Bears' winning streak at 42.

Stanford cruises

HONOLULU — Chiney Ogwumike collected 15 points and 17 rebounds and No. 4 Stanford easily beat Hawaii 69-42.

The Cardinal (4-0) never trailed against the Rainbow Wahine Classic's host team.

Freshman Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 14 points for Hawaii (1-2).

• Tricia Liston and Haley Peters each scored 21 points, leading No. 3 Duke to an 84-45 rout of Presbyterian. The Blue Devils (1-0) have won 14 home openers in a row.

• Pac-12 Arizona beat visiting Cal State Northridge 53-46 in a women's game to rise to 3-0.

Davellyn Whyte scored 16 points for the Wildcats, who won despite shooting 26 percent from the field.
