EAST LANSING, Mich. — William Buford made a high-arcing jumper from the top of the key with a second left, lifting No. 10 Ohio State to a 72-70 victory over fifth-ranked Michigan State on Sunday, forging a three-way tie for the Big Ten regular-season title.
The Buckeyes (25-6 overall, 13-5 Big Ten) earned a share of their third straight conference championship and forced the Spartans (24-7, 13-5) to settle for having a piece of the title along with 13th-ranked Michigan.
Michigan (23-8, 13-5), a Big Ten champion for the first time since 1986, won 71-65 at Penn State earlier in the day.
Buford scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half of the rugged game.
Draymond Green had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Michigan State, which led by as many as 15 points in the first half.
Green missed a long fadeaway shot with 32 seconds left.
"We weren't trying to get that," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said of Green's attempt.
"But it was such a meat market in there — both ways. It was probably the most physical game I've ever been involved with — both ways."
Michigan State is the top-seeded team in the Big Ten tournament, which starts Thursday in Indianapolis.
Michigan is seeded second and Ohio State is the No. 3 seed.
