Former Washington State quarterback Ryan Leaf has deal to write 3 books | College football
Ryan Leaf, former Washington State and NFL quarterback, is planning to write three books — about his life, football career and addiction to painkillers.
PULLMAN — Ryan Leaf, former Washington State and NFL quarterback, is planning to write three books — about his life, football career and addiction to painkillers.
The deal was announced Monday by Crimson Oak Publishing, a Pullman-based publisher that bills itself as specializing in books about "hope, possibility and determination." Leaf, 34, confirmed the deal but declined to comment further.
The first book, targeted for release in October, will focus on Leaf's career at WSU. "It will cover four years, from the moment I decided to attend Washington State up through our Rose Bowl appearance in 1998," Leaf said in a news release.
Another book will be a broader biography covering Leaf's youth in Montana and troubled NFL career.
A third book will be about Leaf's addiction to prescription painkillers, which resulted in a 2009 indictment after he coached quarterbacks for three seasons at West Texas A&M.
In April, Leaf pleaded guilty to eight felony drug charges in Texas and received 10 years of probation and a $20,000 fine.
Maryland fires Friedgen
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Ralph Friedgen was fired as Maryland's coach, effective after the team plays East Carolina in the Dec. 29 Military Bowl in Washington, D.C.
Friedgen, 63, received $2 million to cover 2011, the final year of his contract.
Athletic director Kevin Anderson said he intended to immediately form a committee to find Friedgen's replacement and acknowledged ex-Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is on his preliminary list.
Asked about other names on the list, Anderson declined to comment but said he intends to have the position filled by Jan. 4.
Friedgen has a 74-50 record in 10 seasons at his alma mater. After going 2-10 last season, Maryland is 8-4 this year and Friedgen was voted coach of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"This was a good football team, and I believe it can be great," Anderson said.
