The Spokane Chiefs became the first U.S. team in 10 years to win the Memorial Cup, the championship of the Canadian Hockey League, with a 4-1 win over the host Kitchener Rangers on Sunday.

Dustin Tokarski backstopped the Chiefs with 53 saves and was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Spokane entered the third period with a two-goal lead and prepared for an assault by the Rangers.

"It was pure desperation," Jared Spurgeon said. "We knew they were going to come out in the third period and give it their all ... We played simple hockey and gutted it out."

Spokane got goals in the second period from Drayson Bowman and Trevor Glass.

• Linfield (35-13) was eliminated from the NCAA Division III playoffs with a 3-2 loss to Adrian (Michigan) College at Grand Chute, Wis.
