SEATTLE —

Columbia Sportswear Co. has agreed to pay a fine for distributing mislabeled insect-repellant clothing in violation of federal insecticide laws.

The Portland, Ore.-based company agreed to pay over $100,000 in a settlement reached with the Environmental Protection Agency.

Columbia spokesman Scott Trepanier says the company discovered last year that a couple of thousand hats and gloves treated with insect repellant didn't have labels. It voluntarily reported the problem to the EPA.

Regulators said Tuesday that the clothing didn't have required directions for use and precautionary statements. They say pesticides must be labeled properly to protect people and the environment.

EPA fined the company for similar violations in 2012.

Trepanier says the issue is a labeling one and "nothing about the safety or the performance of the product is in question."
