Eagle Marine Services plans 94 layoffs at Port of Seattle

Eagle Marine Services, a terminal operator at the Port of Seattle, plans to lay off 94 employees by the end of July, according to a notice it filed with the state Employment Security Department.

An Eagle Marine representative declined comment Tuesday on the reason for the layoffs, and referred inquiries to corporate parent American President Lines, which did not return a phone call.

The Port announced an agreement with Eagle Marine last month for the company to move its cargo and breakbulk activities to another terminal to clear the way for a rebuilding of its current home, Terminal 5. The Port wants to modernize Terminal 5 so that it can handle bigger ships.

Under the agreement’s terms, which still must be approved by the Port Commission, Eagle Marine would shift its operations to Terminal 18 this summer.

“What I understand is they’re working very hard to preserve as many jobs as they can as they transition cargo activity from Terminal 5 to Terminal 18,” said Linda Styrk, who manages the Port of Seattle’s seaport. “Everyone is really concerned about the impact to employees.”
