TACOMA, Wash. —

A multinational consortium of chemical companies and investors plans a $1.8 billion plant at the Port of Tacoma that would convert natural gas to methanol. The methanol would be shipped by tanker to China where it would be used to make plastics.

The News Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1k9tlSl ) the consortium called Northwest Innovation Works will be seeking permits over the next year-and-a-half and expects the plant would take about five years to build in two phases.

The Port of Tacoma Commission is scheduled to consider a lease at its May 1 meeting for the site on the Tacoma Tideflats once occupied by the Kaiser aluminum smelter.
