Online game maker Zynga said Thursday that it will cut 314 employees, or 15 percent of its workforce, in a turnaround effort.

The Geekwire website, citing Seattle-area employees on social media, said Zynga will close its Seattle office as part of the plan. San Francisco-based Zynga opened its Pioneer Square office in 2011 with about 50 employees.

The company would not confirm or deny the Seattle closure.

Zynga has already made significant cuts to its workforce. It has about 2,100 employees, down from a peak of 3,300 in 2012.

Its biggest game hits have mostly been played on desktop and laptop computers, but game players increasingly are turning to smartphones and tablets.

Zynga also announced Thursday that it is buying NaturalMotion, a mobile game maker, for $527 million. Zynga hopes the acquisition will bolster its mobile games as its core business deteriorates.
