Mettler-Toledo, a publicy-traded manufacturing company based in Columbus, Ohio, will close a plant in Redmond by the end of September, putting 21 employees out of work.

The company, which calls itself a leading provider of precision instruments for laboratory, industrial and food-retailing applications, notified Washington state officials of its layoff plans this week.

In November, Mettler-Toledo reported a quarterly profit of $74 million, up 3 percent from a year ago, as sales rose 2 percent to $592 million. The company said it expected global market conditions to continue to improve but remained cautious, especially in its outlook for China, which it described as challenging.

A call to the company’s headquarters Friday was not immediately returned.
