Amazon Web Services to add China operation next year

The online giant will debut a limited preview of the Amazon Web Services business in China early next year.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the rapidly growing division that provides infrastructure computing to businesses over the Internet, is moving into China.

Expanding for AWS isn’t merely opening a sales office. needs to set up massive data centers that run business applications that customers tap into over the Web.

Amazon will launch what it’s calling a “limited preview” in early 2014 to a “select group” of Chinese and multinational companies with customers in China. The business applications will run from its new region, as Amazon calls it, established in Beijing.

Typically, businesses want their computing handled locally, both for the speed of data transmission and because regulatory requirements in some cases dictate that data must be handled within that country.

AWS, which analysts estimate generates $3 billion a year in sales, has nine other regions around the world, including four in the United States.
