A company run by the founder and chairman of Emeritus, the nation’s largest operator of assisted living facilities, said it has partnered with a large Chinese real estate developer to build senior care facilities in Beijing.

Cascade Healthcare, a China-based affiliate of Daniel Baty’s Columbia Pacific, said it formed a joint venture with Sino-Ocean Land to build a 110-bed residence called Senior Living L’Amore – Kaijian.

Emeritus and other assisted living companies see opportunity in China, where the tradition of children caring for their own parents is running up against the new reality of one-child families where both spouses may work.

Cascade, which does business as Kaijian in China, said it opened its first 100-bed facility in October in Shanghai, and expects to open its third in Shanghai’s Pudong district this fall.

Emeritus is providing advice on designing and operating the facility, according to a statement from Columbia Pacific.
