How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Tuesday

Stocks were mixed Tuesday after the euro zone's debt woes offset encouraging data on the U.S. housing market. The Dow Jones industrial average rose, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index and the Nasdaq composite fell.

Stocks were mixed Tuesday after the euro zone's debt woes offset encouraging data on the U.S. housing market. The Dow Jones industrial average rose, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index and the Nasdaq composite fell.

The Dow rose 3.76 points, or 0.03 percent, to 14,455.82.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 3.76, or 0.2 percent, to 1,548.34.

The Nasdaq composite index dropped 8.50, or 0.3 percent, to 3,229.10.

For the week:

The Dow is down 58.29 points, or 0.4 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 12.36, or 0.8 percent.

The Nasdaq composite index is down 19.97, or 0.6 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,351.68 points, or 10.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 122.15, or 8.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 209.59, or 6.9 percent.
