How the Dow Jones industrial average fared

U.S. stocks whipsawed Thursday, rising throughout the afternoon before falling in the final minutes of trading.

U.S. stocks whipsawed Thursday, rising throughout the afternoon before falling in the final minutes of trading.

The Dow lost 20.88 points, or 0.2 percent, to 14,054.49.

The Standard & Poor's 500 slipped 1.31, or 0.1 percent, to 1,514.68.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 2.07, or 0.1 percent, to 3,160.19.

For the week:

The Dow is up 53.92, or 0.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 0.92 point, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 1.63 points, or 0.1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 950.35, or 7.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 88.49, or 6.2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 140.68, or 4.7 percent.
