How the major US stock indexes fared Tuesday

U.S. stocks closed lower Tuesday as traders awaited the start of the corporate earnings season.

U.S. stocks closed lower Tuesday as traders awaited the start of the corporate earnings season.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 55.44 points, or 0.4 percent, to 13,328.85.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4.74, or 0.3 percent, to 1,457.15.

The Nasdaq composite index shed 7.01, or 0.2 percent, to 3,091.81.

For the week:

The Dow is down 106.36 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 9.32, or 0.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 9.85, or 0.3 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 224.71 points, or 1.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 30.96 points, or 2.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 72.30 points, or 2.4 percent.
