RARE GLIMPSE: An international trade fair this week gave foreign investors a glimpse at efforts to turn a remote region of North Korea into a manufacturing, tourism and transportation hub.

ROAD BUILT: Rason was earmarked in 1991 as a special economic zone, but little development was done until recently. Now a road from the region to China is paved, railways are being linked to Russia and harbors expanded.

FUTURE UNCLEAR: The Rason International Commercial Trade Center is meant to have rows of modern buildings. Whether that happens will depend on whether China comes through with electricity, supplies and money.
