How the major US stock indexes fared on Thursday
Stocks soared in the U.S. and Europe Thursday after the European Central Bank president vowed to "do whatever it takes" to keep the continent's monetary union intact.

Stocks soared in the U.S. and Europe Thursday after the European Central Bank president vowed to "do whatever it takes" to keep the continent's monetary union intact.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 211.88 points, or 1.7 percent, to 12,887.93.
The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 22.13 points, or 1.7 percent, to 1,360.02.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 39.01 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,893.25.
For the week:
The Dow is up 65.36 points, or 0.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 2.64 points, or 0.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 32.05, or 1.1 percent
For the year:
The Dow is up 670.37 points, or 5.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 102.42 points, or 8.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 288.10 points, or 11.1 percent.
