Latest orders leave Boeing trailing badly in sales race

As the dust settles from the Paris Air Show, Airbus is far ahead of Boeing in sales. Boeing booked more than $3 billion in jet sales in June but lost 10 orders due to cancellations.

Boeing booked new firm orders worth just over $3 billion for 48 jets in June. But it also had 10 cancellations, with Gulf Air of the Middle East canceling eight Dreamliners and Arik Air of Nigeria canceling two 777s.

And when both Airbus and Boeing provided solid data Thursday on firm orders through the end of June, the dust of confusing order announcements at the Paris Air Show settled to reveal Airbus streaking far ahead.

The European manufacturer has 640 net firm orders booked so far this year, while Boeing is lagging badly at 171.

Boeing won orders in June for 40 of its single-aisle 737s, six large 777s and two jumbo-sized 747-8 passenger jets. At list prices, those are valued at $5.6 billion, though after typical discounts the estimated actual price, based on market data from aircraft valuation firm Avitas, is $3.2 billion.

Those totals do not include order commitments from airlines that were announced last month in Paris but are not yet firm contracts. Those commitments — for 54 smaller 737s, four Dreamliners, 13 large 777s and 17 jumbo jet 747-8s — should be finalized later in the year.

The Gulf Air 787 cancellation reduces the total Dreamliner order tally to 827 jets. At the end of 2008, Boeing had 910 orders for the Dreamliner.

In addition, Icelandair has transferred three of its four 787 orders to Norwegian Air Shuttle. After that switch, Norwegian is now due to take a total of five Dreamliners.

The Airbus total of firm orders includes a couple of monster deals: 200 single-aisle A320neos ordered in Paris by Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia; and 150 A320neos plus 30 current A320s ordered by Indian carrier IndiGo. The IndiGo order was announced in January and finalized this month.

The Airbus total also includes an order for 72 A320neos from another Indian carrier, GoAir.

But it does not include a lengthy list of commitments announced in Paris, including orders for 80 A320neos from Frontier Airlines; 50 A320neos each from leasing companies Air Lease Corp. and CIT; and 40 A320neos from JetBlue. Those deals are to be finalized later.
