Software company Nuance leases part of empty Starbucks building

Software company Nuance Communications has leased about one-sixth of the office space at Starbucks' 505 1st Ave. S. building, completed last month.

Software company Nuance Communications has leased about one-sixth of the office space at Starbucks' 505 1st Ave. S. building, completed last month.

The coffee company bought the 287,000-square-foot project in 2006, when it was expanding. Two years later Starbucks determined it didn't need the additional space, and it has had the building on the market since.

The 505 1st building is one of more than a half-dozen large office buildings in greater downtown, begun during the real-estate boom, that have opened over the past 18 months with no or few signed tenants.
