“Awakening: A Paradigm Shift of the Heart” by Rodney Smith (Shambhala, $19.95). Smith, the founding and guiding teacher of the Seattle Insight Meditation Society, tackles the question, “what is enlightenment?” He shares his ideas on how one can find a state of awakening and includes some exercises for readers to try.

“Making Happy: The Art and Science of a Happy Marriage” by Les and Leslie Parrott (Worthy, $19.99). The authors, who founded the Center for Relationship Development at Seattle Pacific University, offer six “counterintuitive” steps to boost happiness and strengthen relationships. The authors offer a three-week plan to produce a happier marriage.

“Chasing Monarchs: Migrating with the Butterflies of Passage” by Robert Michael Pyle (Yale, $20). A reissue of Pyle’s 1999 book, with a new afterword by the author, that follows and explains the annual 9,000-mile migration of North American monarch butterflies. Pyle, a naturalist and author of 18 books, lives along a tributary of the Columbia River in southwest Washington.

“Big Red” by Ken Griffey with Phil Pepe (Triumph, $25.95). Ken Griffey, who played briefly for the Mariners with his more famous and talented son, Ken Griffey Jr., writes about his time with the Cincinnati Reds and being a father. He writes that playing in the same Major League outfield with his superstar son was the thrill of his career.
