Local Book: Cascadia's butterflies
New in local books: a guide to Cascadia's butterflies; "Poser" in paperback; the final installment of Richelle Mead's "Dark Swan" series; and "Dragonswood," a companion volume to Janet Lee Carey's "Dragon's Keep."
"Life Histories of Cascadia Butterflies" by David G. James and David Nunnallee (Oregon State University Press, $35). A comprehensive, copiously illustrated guide to "virtually all" the 158 butterfly species of southern British Columbia, Washington, northern Idaho and northern Oregon. Color photographs of each stage of life — egg, larva, pupa, adult — accompany text on the biology and ecology of each species. James is a professor of entomology at Washington State University. Nunnallee is co-founder of the Washington Butterfly Association.
"Poser: My Life in Twenty-Three Yoga Poses" by Claire Dederer (Picador, $15). New in paperback: the Bainbridge Island author's memoir of motherhood, yoga and family dynamics. Seattle Times reviewer Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett said "Poser" has "the gravitational pull of a good novel and an unusually genuine voice that envelops the reader swiftly." Dederer reads at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Eagle Harbor Book Co. on Bainbridge Island (206-842-5332 or www.eagleharborbooks.com).
"Shadow Heir" by Richelle Mead (Zebra Urban Fantasy, $7.99). The final installment in the popular Seattle-area author's "Dark Swan" series. "Shaman-for-hire Eugenie Markham strives to keep the mortal realm safe from trespassing entities," says the publisher. "But as the Thorn Land's prophecy-haunted queen, there's no refuge for her and her soon-to-be-born children when a mysterious blight begins to devastate the Otherworld."
"Dragonswood" by Janet Lee Carey (Dial, $17.99). For ages 12 and up: the Seattle-area author's tale of an island in an uproar over the death of its king. The pact between dragons, faeries and humans is fraying, and strong-willed Tess is at risk, as she and two friends flee a violent witch-hunter. "Dragonswood" is the companion volume to Carey's "Dragon's Keep."
