Fall Arts Guide | Books: In pursuit of 'Freedom,' fantasy, history
All shapes, sizes and stripes of authors are coming through Seattle this fall.
Seattle Times book editor
Deal
Talk about entertainment for tough times -- most author readings are either free or charge a very nominal fee (of course, authors hope you will buy their book). Here are a couple that only require you to get in the building before everyone else does:
Gail Collins: This New York Times opinion columnist makes me laugh out loud every single time I read her, sometimes after each paragraph. The witty and exceedingly smart Collins discusses her book, "When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present" at the central branch of The Seattle Public Library (Oct. 11). Free
John Lawton: Mystery fans -- if you haven't checked out this British author's Inspector Troy novels, you're in for a treat. If you have read Lawton, then dash on over to the University Book Store to see the author in person reading from his latest, "A Lily of the Field" (Oct. 19). Also free.
All shapes, sizes and stripes of authors are coming through Seattle this fall. Here's a very short list of writers who, beyond their star quality, produce very good books and will share them with Seattle audiences:
Jonathan Franzen: Franzen, author of the great contemporary American novel "The Corrections," has penned a new one, "Freedom," according to rave early reviews. At Seattle Arts & Lectures (Sept. 14).
Cornelia Funke: The author of "Inkheart" has a new book out, "Reckless," featuring two brothers who get lost in a Brothers Grimm-style tale. At The Showbox at the Market, sponsored by University Book Store (Sept. 19).
John Vaillant: The Canadian author of "The Golden Spruce" returns with a mesmerizing true-life tale of a man-eating tiger. Vaillant discusses "The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival" at the Elliott Bay Book Co. (Sept. 22) and at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park (Sept. 23).
Ken Follett: Author of spellbinding mysteries ("Eye of the Needle"), Follett has turned his hand to historical novels. He reads from his new one, "Fall of Giants," at Town Hall (Oct. 1).
Ron Chernow: One of America's great biographers ("The House of Morgan," "Alexander Hamilton," "Titan") has a new book on George Washington. Hear him discuss "Washington: A Life" at Seattle Public Library (Oct. 15).
