Methadone's toll higher in poorer areas
People have died from accidental methadone overdoses across the Puget Sound area. But deaths occur in low-income areas at a rate three times higher than that of high-income areas, according to a Seattle Times analysis. Blue-collar Everett has 99 methadone deaths since 2003. Bellevue, wealthier, with slightly more population, has eight. To save money, the state steers its Medicaid patients to methadone.
