Rising costs and aging boats challenge
Washington's ferry system
Washington operates the largest ferry system in the U.S., carrying 24 million people and 11 million cars and trucks in 2007. But rising fares and changing commute patterns led to an 11 percent decrease in ridership since 2000. In 2006, fares and other revenue covered less than 74 percent of the cost of the ferry system. Only two routes, Seattle-Bainbridge Island and Edmonds-Kingston, collected more in fares than what the ferries cost to operate.
