Kate Riley, Editorial Page Editor

Kate Riley is the editorial page editor, who works with The Times editorial board to develop the opinion page's positions on issues. She joined The Times' editorial page in 2002 as a writer and columnist. A graduate of Redmond High School and the University of Washington, she returned to the Seattle area after spending 17 years working at Eastern Washington newspapers where she was a reporter, editorial writer and editorial page editor. She started her career as a farm writer for the Times-owned Walla Walla Union-Bulletin (Think Walla Walla Sweet Onions and the wine industry.)

Sharon Pian Chan, Associate Opinions Editor / Digital

Sharon is the associate opinions editor / digital, who manages our op-eds and digital content. She also is a member of the editorial board. Chan was previously a senior producer for The Seattle Times home page and mobile platforms. She spent 12 years as a Times reporter, covering beats that included Microsoft, Seattle City Hall, King County and the University of Washington. Chan is a graduate of Pomona College and she grew up in Orange, Calif. She now lives in Capitol Hill with her husband Danny O'Neil.

Jonathan Martin, Editorial Writer

Jonathan Martin has covered social services, politics, prisons and, most recently, the marijuana beat since joining the Seattle Times in 2002 from the Spokesman-Review in Spokane. He is a University of Washington graduate and was a Knight-Wallace journalism fellow at the University of Michigan. He is co-author of "The Other Side of Mercy," about the 2009 Lakewood police officer shootings. He lives in Wallingford with his wife, Francesca, and their two children, who attend Seattle public schools.

Erik Smith, Editorial Writer

Erik Smith has worked for news organizations on both sides of the Washington Cascades and in California. Much of his career has been focused on covering Washington state government, for a variety of newspapers, notably the Tri-City Herald in Kennewick, Wash., and most recently for an Internet publication, Washington State Wire. He is an Eastern Washington native who grew up in Spokane; he graduated from the University of Washington in 1986. A throwback and proud of it, Smith listens to vinyl records on a vacuum-tube hi-fi system and occasionally tools around in his 1963 Pontiac Catalina convertible.

Thanh Tan, Multimedia Editorial Writer

Thanh is a multimedia editorial writer. Prior to joining the editorial board of The Seattle Times, she was a political and general assignment reporter with local TV stations in Boise and Portland, an Emmy-winning reporter / producer / host with Idaho Public Television, and a multimedia reporter with The Texas Tribune in Austin. She has also contributed to "This American Life" and The New York Times. Born and raised in Olympia, Thanh graduated with honors from the University of Southern California. She loves food, music, politics, films, yoga, the outdoors and journalism. She lives in the Mount Baker neighborhood.

Robert J. Vickers , Editorial Writer

Robert J. Vickers has written about city, state and national government, two presidential campaigns, legal affairs and higher education for newspapers in Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas, California and Washington, D.C. He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Howard University, a master's degree in international relations from Syracuse University, and is a former board member of the National Association of Black Journalists. A native Southerner and son of a career Marine, Robert enjoys "good" music, film, two kinds of football and is an unabashed, hop-averse beer snob.

Nikolaj Lasbo, Producer/Editor for Digital Opinion Engagement

Nikolaj (you can call him Niko if the j throws you off) assists in editing the editorial pages and online content. He produces the Editorials/Opinion section online and manages the Northwest Voices blog, culling and curating opinions from some of The Times' most engaged and thoughtful readers. He worked a stint at Microsoft helping produce news apps for Windows 8 and prior to that worked for The Seattle Times as a news producer. Nikolaj's alma mater is the University of Washington, he's a fifth-generation Seattleite (but grew up on Lopez Island), and he spends his winters skiing and his summers on the water.

Caitlin Moran, Community Engagement Editor

Caitlin Moran is community engagement editor for The Times' Education Lab project. Caitlin was born and raised in Snohomish County and currently lives in Capitol Hill. Prior to joining The Seattle Times, she spent three years managing hyperlocal news websites on the Eastside for Patch, a subsidiary of AOL. After graduating from the University of Portland, she spent two years reporting and editing for newspapers in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and Maryland. An outdoor enthusiast, Caitlin spends much of her free time hiking, skiing and rock climbing in the Cascades. Her other hobbies include cooking and running.

Gail is the executive assistant to the editorial staff. She manages the editorial board meeting calendar and works closely with the Editorial Page Editor on administrative tasks. She lives in the Wallingford/Fremont convergence, under the paws of two very demanding canines.
