Racial changes in the Central Area
A 30-year decline
For the first time in 30 years, the Central Area is home to more whites than blacks. The African-American community declined from 16,242 in 1970 to 9,432 in 2000.
Note: The 2000 numbers for African Americans include multiracial blacks.
