Going way off the tourist path in Southern California

Street signs mark an dirt intersection in a never-built neighborhood planned in the 1960s in California City. Near Edwards Air Force Base and the state's third-largest city by area, California City's subdivisions nonetheless have virtually no homes, a vista of nothingness that draws a certain type of curiosity-seeking tourist to the remote stretches of California's interior.
