Sahar Gul, 14, left, who was abused by her in-laws after she refused to become a prostitute, is seen at a shelter in Kabul, Afghanistan, in May 2012. In 2013, a court reversed the convictions of the three people jailed for torturing her. Activists had celebrated the guilty verdicts as a warning to all those who would seek to reverse the strides made by women in Afghanistan in the past 12 years.
