The next giant quake: It’s coming and here’s how

The ground shook about 30 seconds during the magnitude 6.8 Nisqually quake, and damage — like the chunk that fell out of this SoDo building — was estimated at $2 billion. A magnitude 9 quake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone will be nearly 2,000 times more powerful and the ground will shake for up to five minutes. That’s longer than it takes to sing the national anthem — twice — at a baseball game.
