Wilderness advocates battling over whether to save the ways in

Severe 2006 flood damage to Mount Rainier’s Carbon River Road was the last straw for the National Park Service, which, noting that some sections of the road are actually below river grade, closed it once and for all. Trails and a campground in the area now are reached by a 5-mile walk or bike ride along the old road.
