Wilderness advocates battling over whether to save the ways in

The Carbon River, flowing from the Carbon Glacier on Mount Rainier, has not been kind to the road bearing its name. The road, washed out in 2006, will remain permanently closed, adding 5 miles of hiking or cycling to many formerly short, spectacular day hikes in the area.
