Column: Mounting controversies are all about trust

In this Oct. 23, 2012, file photo President Obama campaigns for re-election in Delray Beach, Fla. A Quinnipiac University poll conducted in late May 2013 shows a steep decline in the percentage of people who find Obama honest and trustworthy: 49 percent, versus the 58 percent of their 2011 poll. And since his second-term controversies have taken hold, the poll also shows Obama has taken a hit among independents, which used to be a source of strength for him: 40 percent say he is honest and trustworthy, down from 58 percent in September 2011.
