‘I came back. He didn’t’: 38 years later, closure for a Marine

This photo shows two CH-53 helicopters on the east beach of Koh Tang island off Cambodia on May 15, 1975, in the disastrous rescue operation of the merchant ship Mayaguez. On the left is the Knife 23 chopper, which was hit by rocket-propelled grenade but set down on the beach and unloaded its crew of 25. On the right is Knife 31, which was hit by heavy enemy fire and crashed. Thirteen of its crew of 26 were killed, and the others swam out to sea and were rescued.
