This portrait photo shows James Tilton about the time of his 1865 election campaign for territorial delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives. Five years after Charles Mitchell's flight, Tilton ran as a frank white supremacist, and his supporters argued for a "government of white men, for the benefit of white men." Tilton lost the election to Arthur Denny.
