Navy Lt. James Alden sketched this view of the settlement of Olympia about a year before the Tilton family arrived here by steamer with young slave Charles Mitchell. As the new territory's surveyor general, appointed by President Franklin Pierce, James Tilton moved easily into the Democratic elite of the tiny community.
