Nancy Spaeth was 12 years old in 1959 when her kidneys began to fail. One of the early cases considered by the so-called God Committee in the 1960s, at 19, she was given a slot on the coveted dialysis machines for treatment that saved her life. Since then, she has received four kidney transplants.
