Alwan Shaiye, 37, nears the end of his third weekly 4??-hour dialysis session as Nino Cruz gathers tubes and fluid bags at the Northwest Kidney Center. Shaiye, who has Type 1 Diabetes, received a transplant in 2006 that failed three years later. He's awaiting a match for another transplant. African-Americans disproportionately suffer from kidney disease.
