Elephant havens face zoo-industry backlash

REACHING OUT: Sanctuary co-founder Ed Stewart feeds an African elephant at the California sanctuary, which began in 1984 with a jaguar, a menagerie of lions, bears, wolves, and a 3-year-old African elephant called No. 71. They rescued the malnourished elephant from its wealthy owner in Florida.
