An effective planting like this one at the Bellevue Botanical Garden will outcompete weeds. Mexican feather grass (Naella tenuissima), golden sweet flag (Acorus gramineus 'Ogon') and Japanese blood grass (Imperata cylindrica 'Rubra') cover the hillside; blue catmint livens up the scene.
