Robert Elofson, river-restoration director for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, takes stock of a giant cedar stump where Lake Aldwell, the old Elwha Dam reservoir, used to be. The dam was removed last March, exposing remnants of an ancient forest felled before the reservoir filled. Scars from loggers' springboards are visible in the trunk.
