Our American Promise is at a crossroads

A 48-star flag hung in her front door, Seattle artist Ross Palmer Beecher loves Americana. But beyond the symbols of our shared heritage are current realities that divide us. Politics, competition for jobs, run-amok institutions from banks to government, growing disparities in wealth -- all contribute to a widespread feeling of discontinuity and alienation.
