Francisco Flores, a fifth-generation coffee farmer in Costa Rica, walks through a field of hybrid coffee plants he hopes will fare better with changes in weather patterns. The plants, though, are twice as costly because so few are available. But they produce about 25 percent more coffee and could become less costly once volume picks up.
