When the building boom slowed, Erik Fuchs, an electrical worker, spent a year managing rental houses. But evicting families was not his thing. "You've got to be kind of ugly," he says. "If you're soft, people take advantage of you." Fuchs is working two jobs - one of them in a restaurant - after a long spell of unemployment.
